Chance of Bears acquiring T.O.: unlikely
Any interest the Bears might have in trading for disgruntled Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens was downplayed at Halas Hall on Wednesday.
"We're happy with the guys we have," offensive coordinator Ron Turner said. "We really are. We're excited about the young receivers that we have. They're not playing like young receivers. They're playing well, and I think they're going to continue to get better. We're just going to keep trying to develop them and get the consistency we're looking for. That's where our focus is."
Twenty-two-year-old Earl Bennett leads the Bears with 15 catches and 190 receiving yards, followed closely by 22-year-old rookie Johnny Knox (14 catches, 190 yards) and 26-year-old Devin Hester (14-189). Running back Matt Forte is next with 13 catches for 92 yards and then 24-year-old tight end Greg Olsen with 10 receptions for 94 yards.
Owens, who has 12 catches for 202 yards, will be 36 in December, and he didn't get an endorsement from quarterback Jay Cutler, who was asked what he'd say if the personnel department asked him about the former Pro Bowl receiver.
"I don't think they're going to," Cutler said. "I think they'll keep that upstairs."
Cutler was asked in jest if he had texted or tweeted Owens.
"I don't know T.O.," he said.
But have you watched his reality show, Cutler was asked.
"I did watch it a few times," he said. "It was humorous."
Mum's the word: Rookie offensive lineman Lance Louis, who was charged with misdemeanor assault on Tuesday stemming from a fight last year with San Diego State teammate Nick Sandford, had little to say on the matter Wednesday.
"I'm not talking about it," Louis said. "I've got nothing to say on it. I can't talk about it right now. It's a legal matter. It's being handled. That's about it."
Louis, a seventh-round draft choice, has been a game-day inactive in each of the first four weeks.
Good for them: Quarterback Jay Cutler doesn't begrudge his old Broncos team its 5-0 start, which is one of the biggest surprises of the early season.
"I'm happy for them," Cutler said. "I played for the Broncos so I've got a lot of friends over there, and I'm happy for those guys."
But Cutler did not get to watch their Sunday victory over the Patriots.
"I was on a plane," he said.
Injury update: Defensive tackles Anthony Adams (toe) and Israel Idonije (knee) did not practice Wednesday, nor did running back Adrian Peterson (knee) or Hunter Hillenmeyer (ribs).
Idonije and Peterson are not expected to play, and Hillenmeyer is doubtful but Adams hopes to make his fifth straight start. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris (knee) was limited Wednesday, but linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was a full participant.
