Judge doubles bond for man accused of robbing South Elgin bank
It appears that Joseph G. Dolgach, the Lake in the Hills man accused of robbing a South Elgin bank - won't be getting out of jail anytime soon.
On Wednesday morning, Dolgach, 51, faced an attempted vehicular hijacking charge, which police said stems from when him trying to steal a vehicle from a passing motorist soon after he held up AmCore Bank at 536 S. Randall Road.
Police said the original warrant recommended a $50,000 bail - Dolgach would have needed $5,000 to get out of jail. He was transferred from federal custody on the robbery charge to Kane County.
But during a bond call proceeding Wednesday, Dolgach asked Kane County Judge John A. Noverini for an even lower bond.
Noverini was having none of it.
"Sir, I'm not going to reduce your bond, I'm going to increase it," Noverini told Dolgach, just before he doubled his bond, meaning he needs $10,000 to get out of jail.
Dolgach of the 0-99 block of Westminster Drive, was charged last Thursday with robbing the bank using a wooden stick as his only weapon.
According to court documents:
Dolgach walked into the bank, 536 Randall Road, at about 1:45 p.m. Aug. 25 with "some type of wooden stick or club" and told an employee in the lobby, "I want money, fast. Fast. I want money," court documents state.
Two tellers stuffed $1,918 into Dolgach's bag and then he demanded a third teller to hand over the teller's car keys.
After leaving the bank, Dolgach tried to steal a vehicle from a driver passing by, but that the motorist fought off the attack.
Dolgach ran away but was caught by a South Elgin police sergeant at the nearby Dunkin Donuts on an unrelated matter.
Attempted vehicular hijacking is a Class 2 felony with a sentence range between three and seven years.
But if convicted of bank robbery, Dolgach faces up to 20 years in prison.
His next court appearance is Sept. 9 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Dolgach was unable to make bond and was being held at the Kane County lockup Wednesday.
