Crystal Lake rapist gets 5 years
A Crystal Lake man convicted of raping a woman in Carpentersville last year was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.
Mario Lagunes-Rodriguez, 35, of the 100 block of Monroe Street, was found guilty of criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint in May by Kane County Associate Judge T. Jordan Gallagher, who also handed down the sentence.
Prosecutors said the assault happened Sept. 24, 2008, after Lagunes-Rodriguez lured an acquaintance to a restaurant parking lot on the 2100 block of Elgin Road in Carpentersville.
Once the victim parked her car next to Lagunes-Rodriguez's van, prosecutors said, he forced her into his vehicle and raped her. At some point, she managed to escape and contacted police.
By law, Lagunes-Rodriguez must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He was credited for 351 days already served, meaning he could be released in about 31/2 years.
Lagunes-Rodriguez, who is an undocumented immigrant, also faces deportation after completing his sentence and must register as a sex offender for life, according to the state's attorney's office.
