Wright's on the mark for Fremd
The Fremd juggernaut rolls on, breaking records in its wake.
With tailback Evan Wright setting the school single-game record for rushing yards with 256, the Vikes remained unbeaten (6-0, 2-0 Mid-Suburban West) on Friday night in a home-field 38-13 victory over Schaumburg.
And not just any Schaumburg team. These Saxons (3-3, 1-1) came in on three-game winning streak with a high-powered offense of their own and losses only to state-ranked teams.
They've still only lost to the state's elite as Fremd is No. 4 in the AP poll in Class 8A. Its domination was underscored by the 7-minute, 39-second, 18-play drive it engineered to open the second half, culminating in a Kevin Schaeffer field goal and a 24-7 lead.
"Our offensive line is unbelievable," said head coach Mike Donatucci, not boasting but as amazed and impressed by their performance as Schaumburg had to be deflated.
"Their offensive line - they do a nice job," said Schaumburg head coach Mark Stilling, whose team was within 24-13 in the third quarter after a Darrell Williams' 39-yard bolt for a TD. But the Saxons never matched Fremd's interior strength and Wright's tone-setting running.
"We needed to match their size with our physicality and we couldn't," he said.
And Fremd does have the size.
"I couldn't do it without the offensive line," Wright said when informed of his performance which surpassed the 247 yards by Mario Dorsey in a playoff game 13 years ago.
Donatucci went out of his way to name every one of them - Christian Lombard, Brian Bobek, Michael Rumps, Evan Schaeffer and Michael Metzen - for their ability to spring Wright for TD runs of 34, 20 and 7 yards, as well as Isaiah Coleman (12 carries, 49 yards, 1 TD) and quietly efficient quarterback Rich Concialdi, too.
Coleman earned Wright's praise as a back who could start at so many other schools.
Then, of course, not to be overlooked is Jayme Szafranski, whose two picks, including one on the first play from scrimmage for Schaumburg, set the tone immediately.
"He started us off," said Donatucci.
And make no mistake, winning trumps record-setting for Wright and Fremd.
"The win's more important," Wright said afterward.
And you win by making plays.
"They made plays when they needed to," Stilling said of the Vikes. "Wright's a heck of a player."
Who set a heck of a record.
