Ex-Fox Lake police chief remembered for straight talk, contributions

Former Fox Lake Police Chief James P. Busch Sr., was considered a straight shooter, who told it like it is while doing what was necessary to enhance the police department he loved.

Busch, 67, who served the Fox Lake Police Department for more than 30 years, died suddenly of heart complications on Friday, current Fox Lake police chief Mike Behan said.

Behan, who served under Busch for about 20 years, said Busch is credited with the creation of the many of the tactical emergency responses the police department still uses.

"He brought in the tactical weapons response team here in Fox Lake," Behan said. "And, he also helped create Fox Lake's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 90, as well as the Fox Lake Police Association -- with former chief Robert Trinski.

"But, best of all, he had that type of attitude where he would tell you exactly what you needed to hear," Behan said. "If he liked you, he would tell you. It was refreshing to hear."

Busch started out as a patrolman in 1966, before being promoted to sergeant in 1972.

He was named a detective sergeant and lieutenant before taking over as police chief in 1993. He served as police chief until his retirement in 1997.

After retirement, he worked at Sign Appeal, the Fox Lake sign business that he started with his son, and spent time at his retirement home in Florida.

"I truly consider him a good friend," Behan said. "He will be missed."

Visitation will take place Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the K. K. Hamsher Funeral Home, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Road. The funeral will begin at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday. He will be laid to rest at Cole Cemetery on Wilmot Road in Spring Grove. For more information, please call the funeral home at (847) 587-2100.
