Lauren, Andy Ryan still kicking on college fields
Twins Lauren and Andy Ryan were Rolling Meadows High School's female and male athletes of the year in 2006.
But that year hardly marked the end of their sports careers.
Lauren and Andy are both competing for the third seasons on college soccer teams, Lauren at Idaho State University and Andy competing for Western Illinois.
They certainly keep parents Kathy and Pat on the move.
"We try to get to as many of the matches as possible," Kathy said. "We'll go one time to see Lauren and another to see Andy. When we go to Idaho, we'll try to go when we can catch a few games and stay a little longer since it's a farther trip."
Lauren, a junior midfielder, was the Bengals' top scorer last fall as a sophomore with 4 goals and 10 points. She has 2 goals and 4 points this fall.
Andy, a goalkeeper, stopped 6 shots on goal, including a crucial save on a penalty kick, to pick up the win in his first action of the season when Western defeated High Point 3-2 at the Adidas/Bearcats Invitational in Cincinnati.
"Andy had a really good game," coach Eric Johnson said. "He handled the pressure pretty well in the second half and the stop he made on the penalty kick was incredible."
The Ryans also have an older brother Shaun (2004 graduate), who also played soccer and was a gymnast at Meadows and is now working as a mechanical engineer in Oak Brook.
"All three of them get along so well," Kathy said. "They're constantly in touch with each other. They are best friends. They're always trying to set up times when they can get together It's amazing. When they were all at Meadows, we had a good run there in sports."
