Elgin

• Gia N. Payton, 36, of the 1500 block of Augusta Lane in Cary, on Thursday was charged with forgery and possession of a fictitious identification card, a report said. Police say she used a fake Kentucky driver's license in an attempt to cash a $4,200 check at National City Bank in Elgin that was written out to someone else, but which she signed. Her bail was set at $10,000 and her next court date is Sept. 29 at the Kane County Judicial Center. She could serve a prison sentence between two and five years on the most serious felony.

• Julio Martinez, 23, of the 300 block of Lake Street, Elgin, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 9:46 p.m. Thursday after police were called to investigate a suspicious van at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa St., reports said.

• Marcus D. Banks, 18, of the 1000 block of Front Street, Aurora, was arrested and charged with battery at 6:22 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of St. Charles Street, reports said. He is accused of punching another man in a dispute over a bicycle, reports said.

• Someone broke the rear window on a 1998 Dodge Durango in the 1600 block of Mulberry Court between 12:30 a.m. and 12:55 a.m. Friday and stole a stereo/DVD player valued at $400, reports said.

• Someone took a wallet containing $50 from the purse of an elderly woman shopping at Jewel, 1600 Larkin Ave. between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, reports said.

• Someone cut the lock off a locker at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, at about 11 a.m. Thursday and stole a wallet with $80 in it, a watch and $400 wedding ring, reports said. No arrests were made, reports said.

• Somone stole a 32-foot-long aluminum extension ladder, valued at $350, between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday from the top of a truck in the 100 block of Ann Street, reports said.

Lake in the Hills

• A resident in the 500 block of Willow Street found $20 in counterfeit money in the home's front lawn and phoned police, a report said. Police have turned the investigation over to the United States Secret Service, which reports to the Department of the Treasury. Police said two $5 bills and one $10 were in the front lawn and that the Secret Service determined that they were fake.

Carpentersville

• Matthew J. Williams, 19, of the 0-100 block of Middlesex Drive in Carpentersville, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and criminal trespass to land Thursday. Police said he was banned from entering the 0-100 block of Oxford Road in the Fox View Apartments, but was there anyway, with less than 15 grams of a substance containing benzodiazepine, a tranquilizer. His bail was set at $20,000 and his next court date is Sept. 29 at the Kane County Judicial Center. He could spend up to three years in prison on the possession charge.

• Michael Harrison, 47, of the 100 block of Hazard Road, faces a felony retail theft charge after police said he on Thursday tried stealing more than $150 worth of merchandise from the Kohl's department store at Spring Hill Mall. His bail was set at $25,000 and he is due in court Sept. 29 at the Kane County Judicial Center. Retail theft, in this case, is a Class 3 felony with a prison sentence that ranges between one and three years.
