Man with hatchet robs Bloomingdale gas station
Bloomingdale police say a man with a small hatchet escaped with about $1,200 after robbing a supermarket gasoline station late Monday.
Watch Cmdr. Randy Sater said the bandit struck the gas station on the perimeter of the Meijer store at 128 S. Gary Ave. No one was injured.
Sater said the robbert was holding the small hatchet with a dark handle when he demanded money from two station employees. He said two drawers were emptied and the man fled with the $1,200.
Police were summoned by the workers at 9:42 p.m. Monday. Sater said the suspect was last seen fleeing on foot behind the gas station.
"We pretty much believe the guy jumped into a car," Sater said.
Sater said the man was wearing a black-knit ski cap down to his eyes and a red bandanna around his mouth, similar to the "old cowboy Western things." He said the suspect was described as white, about 20 years old with blond hair and a slim build.
Bartlett police assisted Bloomingdale by sending a canine unit to help in what turned out to be an unsuccessful search, Sater said. He said anyone with information may call Bloomingdale police at (630) 529-9868.
No customers were in the gas station when the robbery occurred.
