Jonathan Toews realized how lucky he was

Jonathan Toews realized how lucky he was Friday night.

When Minnesota's Andy Hilbert hit Toews from behind and sent the Blackhawks captain crashing into the boards early in the second period, the season flashed before the eyes of many Hawks fans.

The play was similar to what happened to Adam Burish, who tore the ACL in his knee last week on a hit from Minnesota's Benoit Pouliot. Toews grabbed his left leg after Hilbert's hit and briefly went to the dressing room before returning to finish the game.

"I was lucky nothing bad happened," Toews said.

Other Hawks haven't been as lucky this preseason. Burish is gone for six months while Kris Versteeg (upper body), Dustin Byfuglien (groin) and Jack Skille (lower body) all remain questionable for Friday's regular-season opener against Florida in Finland.

Based on how training camp has gone, Hawks coach Joel Quenneville admitted he had ugly thoughts run through his mind when he saw Toews go into the boards.

"It seems like the last three games we've had things happen and you start thinking that all of a sudden it's your stretch and you're getting banged up on a regular basis, but he's fine," Quenneville said.

TV schedule: The exhibition games on Monday and Tuesday in Zurich, Switzerland, against HC Davos and ZSC Zurich will be broadcast at 1:15 p.m. each day on NHL.com.

The high road: Marty Havlat had nothing bad to say about the Hawks following Friday's game at the United Center where he had a goal and assist in Minnesota's 4-3 loss.

"It felt weird and different, but it's still the preseason," Havlat said. "It's all about getting ready, and getting used to new teammates and a new system. We have to work on everything."

Havlat finished with 3 goals in two exhibition games against the Hawks.

"He looked good in both games we saw him," Joel Quenneville said. "We know what he can do. His consistency and his predictability in his play last year was exactly what we wanted as a team and a coach. We wish him well. He was good for us, but sometimes change of scenery happens in our business."

Believe it or not: Peter Forsberg wants to try the NHL again and reportedly would like to play for one of three teams: Washington, Philadelphia or the Hawks.

The 36-year-old former MVP is coming off multiple foot surgeries and is currently playing for Modo in the Swedish Elite League on a one-week tryout contract.

Forsberg, who has 2 goals in two games for Modo, cannot play a game in Europe once the NHL season starts or he becomes ineligible to return to the league he once dominated.
