Elburn charity car show to help Figgins Foundation
Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez's 3rd Annual Charity Car and Motorcycle Show in Elburn this weekend will benefit an organization that provides heart screens to police officers.
The show is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Martin farm on the 2S100 block of Green Road, with vehicle registration starting at 9 a.m.
"It's an opportunity for families to get out, do something positive and enjoy the weather," Perez said.
Perez said he expects to raise at least $6,000 for the Daniel P. Figgins Memorial Foundation, formed in honor of the St. Charles police sergeant who died of a heart attack April 9, 2005.
The nonprofit organization's mission is to reduce the number of heart disease-related deaths among police through education and free health screens.
"They've looked out for officers throughout Kane County," Perez said of the group." It's a positive way to keep Dan Figgins' memory alive."
Last year, about 175 vehicles, including classic and modified cars, trucks and motorcycles, turned out for the show, which raised about $6,000 for the disabled American veterans service group.
Organizers already are on their way to toppling that amount, Perez said, thanks to increasing support from local businesses and sponsors.
"We're hoping to go well beyond that this year," he said. "Obviously, there's a great deal of generosity in the community."
The registration fee for entering a car in the show is $10, with proceeds going to the foundation. There also will be music, food, free blood-pressure checks, prizes and a 50/50 raffle.
This is the first year the event is taking place in Elburn rather than in the parking lot at the courthouse in St. Charles.
