Glenbard W. goal stands against Leyden
Leyden outshot Glenbard West on Wednesday afternoon in Glen Ellyn, but the Hilltoppers had the shot that counted, claiming a 1-0 boys soccer victory in a West Suburban Conference crossover game.
"We did not really have that many scoring opportunities, but I think overall we defend very well and I always tell my players if we keep the games close we are always capable of creating at least four or five quality chances," Glenbard West coach Maciek Kusmierz said. "If we do get a goal out of them then we might have a shot at winning the game."
The Hilltoppers (10-6) got their goal in the 42nd minute. Joe Bremer played his free kick near the corner flag short to JP Minogue near the corner of the penalty area. Minogue sent a cross across the box for Kris Szewczyk to head into the Leyden goal.
No matter how much the Eagles tried to attack the Glenbard West net, the Hilltoppers cleared the ball every time.
"We've been in that spot before," Leyden coach Mark Valintis said. "There's no reason to think that we couldn't come back. We make a stupid mental error ... and we give him a free kick. We lose composure, lose shape. It was a good goal for them. That was a great play. It's a credit to them. Part of our bad play today had a lot to do with their play."
It was the second victory in as many days for Glenbard West, which defeated Silver Division rival Downers North 2-0 Tuesday.
"Basically, I'm pretty happy with the effort the guys put into this game," Kusmierz said. "They played their hearts out both of the games and they got rewarded with two wins."
Palatine 3, Buffalo Grove 0: Kyle Held had 5 saves and Willie Filian had 2 assists as Palatine (13-1-1, 8-0-1) remained unbeaten in Mid-Suburban League play.
Kosta Risteski scored the only goal the Pirates needed on a Josh Clark assist. Stefan Thabuteau and Jacob Velinski scored off Filian feeds.
