League hosts "kickoff" event

Residents from Glen Ellyn and surrounding communities interested in joining the League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn may attend the group's "kickoff" meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St. Organizers say the event is an opportunity to learn more about the League and become involved with the community. The group is a nonpartisan organization that doesn't support or oppose any political party or candidate. For details, visit lwvge.org.

Villa Park hydrant flushing

Villa Park will perform its semiannual water main flushing between 7 a.m. and noon Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 8-11. Residents are asked not to do laundry during these times because rust stains could damage clothing. For details, call the public works department at (630) 834-8505.

Disaster preparedness

West Chicago is offering a Community Emergency Response Training Course for residents to provide basic training in disaster preparedness. The seven-week class meets 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays starting Sept. 15. Participants must be 18 or older and live or work in West Chicago or the West Chicago Fire Protection District. The course is free and includes a disaster preparedness kit. Classes are at the fire protection district headquarters, 200 Fremont St. To enroll, call (630) 231-2123.

Tri-town toast

A beer and wine tasting to benefit Tri-Town YMCA is from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at 20 West Wine & Spirits, 20 W. St. Charles Road, Lombard. A $20 donation buys a wristband good for unlimited tastings of beer and wine. Food also will be available for purchase. The Tri-Town YMCA serves residents of Lombard, Villa Park and Oakbrook Terrace.
