Lakemoor names new police chief

Glenn D. Leonard, a 26-year police veteran, is set to take over as Lakemoor's police chief, village officials said.

Police Sgt. Rick Iverson has handled the job on an interim basis since new mayor Todd Weihofen decided not to reappoint former top cop Wallace Frasier.

Leonard, 51, who worked with the Illinois State Police, takes over Sept. 1, pending a final background check. The St. Charles resident said he plans to meet with local business owners and residents to determine their needs and become familiar with the community.

"I don't have any immediate goals for the police department other than I plan to review policies," he said. "And I plan to review what's transpired with interim chief (Rick) Iverson over the last few months and with Wallace Frasier."

Weihofen said after hearing many complaints about the police department during the election, he wanted to go in a different direction. Most complaints involved professionalism and the way officers interacted with the community, he said.

"I want people in my community to respect their police," Weihofen said.

More than 60 people applied for the job, Weihofen said, and he brought the top two candidates to the police committee before making a decision.

The village board unanimously approved Leonard's appointment at a meeting Thursday night. Leonard will be paid an annual salary of $80,000.
