What happened to brotherhood?
Sixty-one years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, health care is still not available to all Americans. Article 25 of the declaration states, "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control."
To those who are against health care reform, Article 1 of the declaration states, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act toward one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
What has happened to our spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood in this country? Are you my sister or brother only if we enjoy the same socio-economic status, share the same religion, race or politics? I'm afraid that's the mindset we have sunk to. Let's look out for all of our brothers and sisters by supporting health care reform. It's the American thing to do.
