Cardinals RB Wells agrees to 5-year deal
A slimmed-down Beanie Wells arrived at the Arizona Cardinals training camp in the wee hours on Saturday and set his sights on winning the starting running back job by the time the season begins.
"I'm the type of guy that I like to get the ball and I like to get it often," he said at a news conference. "I haven't thought about sharing carries too much. I'm just going to get here and work hard and hopefully come out of camp that No. 1 guy."
Wells had already been in camp for a few hours when the Cardinals announced that they had agreed to terms with the Ohio State back, their No. 1 draft pick and the 31st selection overall. He took his physical Friday and said he arrived at camp about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Wells had been waiting in Phoenix for his agent Todd Frances to work out the details of the five-year contract. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
"I was stressing my agent," Wells said, "and just telling him to get things rolling and get me in there."
Cardinals coaches wanted Wells to trim his weight, and he arrived in camp at 224 pounds, down from the 246 he weighed when he first arrived in Arizona shortly after the draft.
"That was the most I had ever been," he said. "I blame it on the NFL for sending us around to all those different teams and they were feeding us like crazy."
WR Edwards out: Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards missed the team's first training camp practice with an injury no one wants to talk about.
Edwards rode a stationary bike, ran sprints and stretched while his teammates sweated through the first of two practices Saturday under first-year Browns coach Eric Mangini.
Edwards, who missed minicamp in June with a leg injury, deflected questions about the nature and severity of his injury. There have been reports that Edwards hurt himself playing basketball, but the Browns' top playmaker refused to divulge any information.
Mason returns: Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason emerged from retirement Saturday, less than three weeks after abruptly announcing the end to his 12-year career. Mason called team owner Steve Bisciotti, expressing his desire to return. The 35-year-old Mason showed up at training camp after the morning practice session and met with general manager Ozzie Newsome.
Big Ben apologizes: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger apologized to his teammates for causing a possible distraction, then answered questions Saturday for the first time since being named as the defendant in a Nevada civil lawsuit that accuses him of sexual assault.
He declined to discuss his legal problems, or even acknowledge them, saying, "I'm playing football."
Then Roethlisberger said it again, as if to emphasize there will be no questions answered during training camp about any issue other than the Steelers.
"This is what I do, it's football," Roethlisberger said after being asked if he could stay focused. "I don't know what you're talking about. It's football."
