Government due for good performance
In response to Kelan McDonnell's July 26 Fence Post letter, Mr. McDonnell, you could not have been referring to the health-care bill currently before Congress, because that bill and your explanation of universal health care are complete non sequiturs.
You're absolutely right about how universal health care is supposed to work. But you're dead wrong about how it does work. Perhaps you should ask your overseas friends why, if their system is so great, do citizens in nations with so-called universal health care flock to the U.S. when they need specialized medical treatment.
Wow - they leave their "free treatment" behind because they'd rather pay 100 percent out-of-pocket in the U.S. Interesting.
Perhaps the woman in Sweden who was denied necessary back surgery because she was "too old and had already had heart surgery" could shed some light on this.
Regardless of how things have gone in other nations, the U.S. government has consistently botched every private field they've gotten their claws into. Look at the financial disasters we call welfare, Medicare, and Social Security.
Actually, maybe we should let the government handle everyone's health care after all. They're due for a good performance.
