Potter Road work continues:

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 27, weather permitting, traffic on Potter Road between Golf Road and Dempster Street will be restricted to southbound only and will be diverted to temporary pavement west of the existing roadway, according to the Cook County Highway Department. On Friday, Aug. 28, weather permitting, there will be a change in traffic pattern on Ballard Road: westbound only traffic will be allowed in the construction zone 1,000 feet either side of Potter Road. Work includes the installation of the main storm sewer line and two lanes of new pavement. The detour route for eastbound Ballard Road will be north on East River Road to eastbound Golf Road to Potter Road south. The detour route will be posted.

Police chief gets honor:

Schaumburg Police Chief Brian S. Howerton has been chosen as one of 25 law enforcement executives nationwide to participate in a National Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women hosted by The International Association of Chiefs of Police. During the four-day institute beginning Sunday, Aug. 30, in Chicago, Howerton will explore innovative approaches for investigating crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. Chiefs will develop action plans for proactive coordinated community collaboration. The program is funded by the Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women.

Sleep program accredited:

The St. Alexius Center for Sleep Healt in Hoffman Estates has received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the group. Home to benefit from party:

A free concert to benefit Emmaus House of Hospitality, a charity dedicated to fighting poverty and homelessness in Northwest suburbs, will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, at Moe's Southwest Grill, 21720 W. Long Grove Road, Deer Park. Spin the magic wheel for $1 and win prizes. All the magic wheel proceeds and 20 percent of Moe's sales revenue between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. will go to charity. Air event is Saturday:

The Palwaukee Composite Civil Air Patrol Squadron will participate in the Northwest Suburbs Aviation and Emergency Services Open House 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Chicago Executive Airport Hangar 10 off Wolf Road. C-172, C-182 and GA-8 aircraft will be on display and ground teams will demonstrate search and rescue techniques. Cadets will provide information regarding Civil Air Patrol youth programs. Members of the Young Eagles program will provide airplane rides to kids. Windy City Helicopters will also be on hand. And at least one of the local fire departments will be displaying their equipment. More information about the squadron is at pwk.group22.net.

NAMI class on mental illness:

A 12-week class to help people understand and support individuals with mental disorders while maintaining their own well-being, will begin Wednesday, Aug. 26 in Arlington Heights and on Sept. 15 in Barrington. Hosted by the Barrington area chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, classes are for family members, partners and friends of people with serious mental illness. Classes are free. The Arlington Heights class is 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays at Northwest Community Hospital; the Barrington class is 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Barrington High School. Registration is needed.
