Batavia's Fruendt, St. Francis' McMahon both score 30 points

Nick Fruendt fans were not disappointed one bit Wednesday night.

The Northwestern-bound Fruendt kicked off the Batavia boys basketball team's season with 30 points and 12 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 69-47 win against Addison Trail in the first night of the Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic at Batavia.

"I didn't want to force anything," Fruendt said. "I remember last year, I forced a ton of stuff, so this year, I tried to be relaxed. I was really relaxed out there."

"He can (score) from a number of different spots," added Batavia coach Jim Roberts. "I think the big thing for him right now is that he's doing it with no wasted movement. Everything is for a purpose."

This is the senior's fourth year starting on varsity.

"Nick Fruendt is a great player," Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons said. "Our kids knew coming in knew that he was their go-to guy, but they have such a good program over here, when you put a lot of attention on him, they have guys around him who can just do some great things on the basketball floor. I told the kids I've seen Nick play for three years now, and when I told them he scored 30 points, they were amazed. He's a good player."

Addison Trail (0-1) hung with the Bulldogs for most of the first half. However, once Batavia (1-0), took a double-digit lead after a 3-pointer from Fruendt (16 first-half points), the Trailblazers never caught up.

Addison Trail came as close as 32-24 in the opening minute of the third, but Batavia proceeded to go on a 9-0 run, led by 4 different players.

The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run toward the end of the quarter for a 49-28 lead with 2:14 left in the third.

"I was real pleased with our effort, but toward the end of the game, we were playing tired," Lyons said. "That's what good teams do -- wear you down."

In addition to Fruendt, Batavia was led by David Bryant's 14 points.

"(Bryant) did an excellent job of squaring up," Roberts said of his third-year varsity player. "He did a good job of getting his feet set. When he does that, he's a very good shooter."

Addison Trail's leaders were Vince Noworyta (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Matt Davies (13 points).

St. Francis 67, Aurora Christian 45: Way to open the season, Brian McMahon.

The senior on the Spartans scored a career-high 30 points in the win against the Eagles in the first day of the Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic at Batavia Wednesday.

"He's the key to our success," Spartans coach Shawn Healy said. "He's our main returner, phenomenal athlete, captain of our team. We are going to go with Brian. He is going to lead us wherever we go."

"It's a great feeling," McMahon said of his career high. "The whole team played well together. It's just good to get the first (win) off your shoulders."

McMahon did the majority of the damage in the third quarter, when the Spartans outscored the Eagles 23-9.

His teammate, Dan McCoy, was also a difference-maker, as the senior scored the first 11 points of the quarter. He used three 3-pointers and a basket to convincingly push the Spartans ahead by double-digits for the first time.

"(McCoy) works so hard, he's such a streaky shooter when he's on," Healy said. "Another great thing about Dan is if you watch him play, he moves so well. He really cuts hard. He gets good looks because he moves well with out the basketball."

McMahon then took over with the next 4 points. When the 15-0 run was complete, St. Francis led 37-18 with 3:07 left in the third.

Aurora Christian attempted a run at the start of the fourth, when three players contributed a 7-0 run to cut the Spartans' lead to 45-34 with 6:12 remaining in the game.

"I thought we could maybe get it back, but then maybe we'd foul them or they'd hit a (3-pointer)," said Aurora Christian coach Don Davidson, whose Eagles led all of the first quarter. "I was pleased with the comeback we made."

The Spartans scored the next 3 points and never let their lead slip under double digits.

In addition to McMahon, McCoy finished with 16 points, along with Bob Vonderhaar's 11 points.

The Eagles were led by Phil Rutherford off the bench. He finished with 15 points, all on 3-pointers. Starter Travis Cleveland added 10 points and 8 rebounds in his first varsity game.
