Marriage is for any two people in love

On Aug. 25, a letter was published by a writer who clearly did not approve of gay marriage. The letter asked the Daily Herald to not publish same sex marriage announcements. The writer claimed that our culture and society see marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

I would like to tell the writer that she needs to come to grips with the times. Homosexual marriage is a part of our culture and should not be frowned upon. It was also once our cultural view that marriage must be between a white man and a white woman. Fortunately, we realized that there is no superior race, and people of any ethnicity are given the privilege of marriage.

In regards to the writer's comment that American traditions and religious beliefs do not allow for same sex marriage, I say: Open a history book. The United States was founded on tolerance of religious practices. Our country is also a melting pot of traditions from various cultural and religious groups.

To say that "American" belief does not accept gay marriage is to completely ignore the principles on which our country was founded. So please, do not treat homosexuals as inferior. Just as we realized whites were not superior to blacks, we should realize that heterosexuals are not superior to homosexuals. Marriage is for any two people in love. Let people in the land of the free take advantage of that fact.
