Police searching for vandals:

Naperville police are searching for vandals who used red spray paint to damage several vehicles, fences and homes Aug. 7 and 8 on the city's south side. Police said they also received several reports of damaged mailboxes during that same time period, mostly on the 1400 block of Terrance Drive. Police said they have no suspects, but Naperville Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006. Callers may remain anonymous.

Downtown Alive! continues:

Aurora's Downtown Alive! concert series continues tonight and Saturday with a variety of free performances on Galena Boulevard between Broadway and River Street. Hot Rocks, a Rolling Stones tribute band, performs at 6:15 p.m. today and Hi Infidelity takes the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday's schedule includes performances by August at 2:30 p.m., The Moods at 4 p.m., Elevation at 5:30 p.m. and American English at 8 p.m. For details, call (630) 844-4731 or visit www.downtownalive aurora.com.

Naperville adds two concerts:

A pair of free concerts have been added to Naperville Park District's Rollin' on the River concert series. On Aug. 21, Andrew Hubner will present a solo acoustic performance and on Aug. 28 Band Called Catch will perform acoustic rock and folk. The concerts are from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Riverwalk Pavilion, Jackson Avenue and Webster Street, in downtown. For details, visit www.napervilleparks.org.

Golf course offers discount:

Families and young people looking to get in some golf before students head back to school can play at discounted rates from Aug. 17 to Aug. 28 at Western Acres Golf Course, 2400 W. Aurora park to reopen:

Fox Valley Park District is holding a grand reopening for the newly refurbished May Street Park at 3 p.m. Saturday at the park, just south of Illinois Avenue between May Street and North Highland Avenue, Aurora. The renovated park includes an expanded shelter and plaza area, resurfaced basketball courts and parking lot, a paved path from the parking lot to the playground, and additional landscaping.

NEDSRA athletes win medals:

Five athletes in the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association won gold and silver medals in recent Special Olympic tennis and golf tournaments. The gold medal winners will compete statewide in the fall. The two tennis players who garnered the gold in the 2009 Special Olympics Illinois Northeastern Area Tennis Tournament held in late July at Grayslake High School were Michael Pearce, 31, of Wood Dale and Ryan Murray, 15, of Villa Park. Pearce took first place in his division for his short court singles match and Murray took first place in his traditional singles match and in the unified doubles match. At the Area 2 Golf Tournament held at Bartlett Hills Golf Course in early August, Jacob Shimanek, 12, of Wood Dale won a gold medal with his father, Dave, as caddie in the Level 4 competition. Danny Orlando, 12, of Bartlett with his father, Nick, as caddie earned a silver medal in Level 4. Chris Rinaldi, 30, of Roselle and his father, Roy, won a gold medal in the Level 3 competition.

Bake sale coming up:

The Glen Ellyn Historical Society will hold its annual bake sale starting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 21 at its booth at the Glen Ellyn Farmers Market, in the Main Street parking lot between Duane and Hillside streets in downtown. The sale has become legendary for its pies, cakes, fruit breads and cookies. Historical society members who want to participate may call (630) 469-6372.

Crime stopping efforts lauded:

Naperville Police Department Crime Prevention Specialist Marcia Schild, the Naperville Community Radio Watch volunteer group and Minuteman Press are all recipients of the 2009 Illinois Crime Prevention Association awards. Schild has been with the department for more than 22 years and has provided safety education to more than 8,400 students. She also coordinates several safety programs for the department. The radio watch volunteer group was established in 1982 and has logged more than 160,000 volunteer hours helping to reduce crime and enhance public safety. Minuteman Press has been a police department partner for more than 20 years and prints the annual Crime Prevention Calendar and a booklet for the "On Your Own" program.
