Two charged in shooting of 11-year-old Aurora girl

A North Aurora man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder for his alleged role in a Tuesday night shooting that wounded two people, including an 11-year-old girl.

Dontae J. Torres, 19, of the 100 block of Lincolnway Avenue in North Aurora, also is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and is being held on $1 million bond in Kane County.

Adrian Barraza, 20, of the 800 block of Gillette Avenue in Aurora, has been charged with single counts of unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of ammunition. His bail was set at $20,000 and he also is being held in Kane County.

Torres is accused of shooting and wounding 27-year-old Shaun Ramirez and his neice, 11-year-old Darkeya Darden, just before 9:20 p.m. Tuesday as they sat on a front porch of a home in the 800 block of Gillette Avenue.

Police say the victims were approached by Torres, who shot them and then ran northwest from the scene.

Both victims were transported by Aurora paramedics to a hospital where the child was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and the adult for a gunshot wound to the arm.

Torres and Barraza were both arrested shortly after the shooting by responding officers who were searching the area. Both were apprehended without incident in a backyard in the 800 block of North May Street.

Torres also had an outstanding warrant for resisting arrest.

A loaded handgun was located in a shed behind Barraza's home but police are not yet sure it was the weapon used in the shooting. Police have not been able to determine a motive in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
