Why not let the embryo live?

According to the July 9 World & Nation in 60 seconds, British scientists have found a way to make sperm from embryonic stem cells. This "accomplishment, they say, may someday help infertile men father children."

I need someone to explain the logic of this. An embryo is destroyed to make sperm to help a man father a child. It's like destroying an acorn to find another way to grow an oak tree. Why not let the embryo live and the infertile father can adopt the resulting baby?
