Man accused of molestation
An 87-year-old Roselle man active with local church and charity groups is accused of molesting two boys in his home last summer after inviting them to a pool party.
Chester Stabrowski made his first court appearance early Wednesday since being accused of predatory criminal sexual assault charges. He was set free later that afternoon after posting $50,000 pending a May 19 arraignment.
Authorities said Stabrowski molested the boys, both less than 18, in his home at 495 W. Maple last summer after befriending them while volunteering at St. Walters Church in Roselle. Stabrowski also is a member of the local Knights of Columbus.
"What Mr. Sabrowoski is accused of, sexually assaulting two young boys, is appalling and will not be tolerated," DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said. "It is alleged that through his position as a church volunteer, the defendant gained the trust of these children only to betray that trust in the worst possible way."
Added Roselle Police Chief James Kruger: "This incident should serve as a reminder to all parents to talk to their children."
Authorities are urging anyone who may have pertinent information about the case to call John Lawson, Roselle's acting deputy police chief, at (630) 671-4044.
Police said they learned of the allegation after one of the boys told a parent. The parent contacted the church pastor, who immediately notified authorities.
Stabrowski is a widower who lives alone. He does not have a prior criminal history.
