Scouting: Vernon Hills @ Round Lake

Vernon Hills (3-1, 2-0) at Round Lake (0-4, 0-2)

When 1 p.m., Saturday

Last week Vernon Hills def. Lakes 20-17; Round Lake lost to Grant, 54-0.

Skinny Last week, Vernon Hills coach Tony Monken had to worry about making sure his team didn't get too pumped up for its game against Lakes. It was, after all, the Cougars' first game after sitting idle (and picking up a forfeited win) in Week 3 due to a suspension levied against their opponent, North Chicago. Now, this week, Monken has to worry about a possible letdown. His team has gone from the high of its return to action to the reality that a winless team is on the docket. "I keep telling the guys that the scariest games are when you're playing someone who has nothing to lose," Monken said. "It's Round Lake's homecoming. They'll be fired up, and they'd love to beat us. We're going to have to play our best football."-The Cougars are at their best when junior DaVaris Daniels is at his best. The highly regarded Division I recruit has done a little bit of everything this season, including playing quarterback. Lately, however, sophomore Steve Nelson has been taking most of the snaps. One of the favorite targets of both Daniels and Nelson is Evan Spencer, who caught 4 passes for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns against Lakes. "Evan had an outstanding game," Monken said. "He's coming into his own more and more every day. He makes a lot of big plays for us."-Round Lake's go-to guys are running backs Nick Olson and Edgar Rivera.
