Warren-Newport Public Library notes

The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport Townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.

Teens Get Active: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities.

• The TAG Team teen advisory group will meet at noon on Saturday.

• The Teen Screen movie club will get together at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 for a free showing of "The Last Mimzy," rated "PG."

• The next meeting of the Anime Club will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 15.

• Entry forms for the second annual Teen Cookie Bake Off will be available Saturday.

Family Reading Night: Families with children ages 4 and older are invited to decorate a free, reusable canvas book bag using fabric markers while enjoying light refreshments during Family Reading Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the McCullough Room. Children's librarian Jane Friess will challenge families to "Read Outside the Box" and explore the wide spectrum of the collection, going beyond picture books to chapter books, readers, non-fiction and biographies. Registration is required.

Quilt Trunk Show: Learn how local seamstress Sharon Henders evolved as a quilter at 7 p.m. Nov. 8. Henders, also a quilting instructor, will display her collection and talk her craft. Registration is required.

Book discussions: The Warren-Newport Public Library will hold several book discussion groups under the leadership of librarian Debbie Hoffman.

• The Saturday fiction group will discuss "The Painted Veil" by W. Somerset Maugham at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 10.

• The Tuesday nonfiction group will tackle "All the President's Men" by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13.

• The Tuesday evening fiction group will discuss "Black Swan Green" by David Mitchell at 7 p.m. Nov. 13. Reservations are required and new members are welcome.

Friends Book Sale: The Friends of the Warren-Newport Public Library will hold a one-day Gift and Special Book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in the lobby meeting room. This sale will feature a surplus of special books too numerous to fit into the Book Ends used book room, which is open during library hours. The next meetings of the Friends of the Library will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 15. New members are always welcome.

Children's Book Week: The following family programs to celebrate Children's Book Week are free and require registration.

• Musician Alan Lieberman will sing a variety of children's songs while inviting audience participation at 7 p.m. Nov. 12.

• Author Lorijo Metz will present her book "Floridus Bloom and the Planet of Gloom" at 7 p.m. Nov. 14.

Friends Raffle: A drawing will be held Dec. 1 for a batch of prizes in the annual fall raffle sponsored by the Friends of the Warren-Newport Public Library. Prizes include the American Girl doll Niki with outfits and accessories, Robosapien robots, an atomic clock, a spa package, an afghan, five pies, hand quilted table runners and theater tickets. Raffle tickets are $1 each, six for $5, during selected sale times in the lobby, where the prizes are on display.

Library Café: Visitors to the Warren-Newport Public Library can enjoy their coffee and more with the opening of K-Sweets Cafe. The cafe serves sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, sweets and paninis. It is also a free wireless hotspot. For more information, call (847) 782-2233.

Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and non-fiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday.

Math tutors: The Warren-Newport Public Library hosts free volunteer math tutors who are Motorola professionals from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for drop-in help for fifth-grade through senior high school students.
