The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square-mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport Townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.

Let's talk books: Share ideas on books in three book discussion groups under the leadership of librarian Debbie Hoffman. The Saturday fiction group discusses "Digging to America" by Anne Tyler at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Tuesday non-fiction group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to tackle "Silent Night" by Stanley Weintraub. The Tuesday evening fiction group will discuss "The Book Thief" by Markus Zukas at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Reservations are required and new members are welcome.

Activities for teens: Teens in grade 6 and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities.

• The second annual Teen Cookie Bake Off is under way with judging scheduled for Saturday; entry forms are available at the children's desk.

• The TAG Team teen advisory group will meet at noon Saturday.

• The next meeting of the Anime Club will be 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 20.

G. B. Shaw and his women: Discover the female characters of 19th century Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw in a live performance by ShawChicago at 2 p.m. Sunday. "The Women of Shaw" represents the company's fourth visit to the library. The free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and requires registration.

Free computer classes: The Warren-Newport Public Library offers learning opportunities to beginner computer users with free classes. Basic Microsoft Word will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 and 7 p.m. Dec. 17. Participants will have hands-on instruction in a small group setting with up-to-date equipment and skilled teachers from the library reference staff. Reservations, along with mouse and keyboard skills, are required.

Library Café: Visitors to the Warren-Newport Public Library can enjoy their coffee and more with the opening of K-Sweets Cafe. The cafe serves sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, sweets and paninis. The cafe is also a free wireless hotspot. For more information, call (847) 782-2233.

Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and non-fiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month.

Math tutors: The Warren-Newport Public Library hosts free volunteer math tutors who are Motorola professionals from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for drop-in help for fifth-grade through high school students.
