Two bike paths to be linked in Schaumburg
The completion of Schaumburg's expanded public works headquarters and fifth fire station means the village can fulfill a decade-old plan to connect two bike paths.
Trustees plan to award a contract Tuesday to Maneval Construction Co. of Grayslake to build a connection between the Lancer Creek Park bike path and the path running along Plum Grove Road between the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway and Biesterfield Road.
"We're trying to connect one off-street path with another," Schaumburg Transportation Director June Johnson said.
The two paths will connect along the south side of the recently finished public works headquarters and fire station on Plum Grove Road.
Though the path link was envisioned 10 years ago, officials always knew it would have to wait until after the building project, Village Manager Ken Fritz said.
Schaumburg budgeted $190,000 for the project and received nine bids ranging from $140,000 to $199,211.
The lowest originally appeared to be the $140,000 from Dominic Fiordirosa Construction. But closer examination of the bid revealed its total cost to be $189,164, making it the third highest.
The next lowest bids belonged to A Lamp Concrete Contractors of Schaumburg for $146,380 and Maneval Construction Co for $152,243.
Because of the strong recommendations for Maneval from other suburbs, forest preserve districts and the state for bike path work, village staff recommended waiving the bidding process and awarding the contract to Maneval.
