Water balloon fight, anyone?

With the temperatures rising, West Dundee has just the remedy to cool down. Resident Jill Harris - in conjunction with the village - will host a water balloon fight from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19 at Prairie Meadow Park on Village Quarter Road. The event is free and will include organized games like last man standing, water balloon toss and a free-for-all. Volunteers are needed to fill balloons and perform other duties. For details, e-mail Jill Harris at Topher11071991@yahoo.com or contact Jill Tibbetts at West Dundee village hall at (847) 551-3800 or e-mail ktibbetts@wdundee.org.

Certifiably green

The U.S. Green Building Council has given Pingree Grove's new police station the LEED Silver award for using many sustainable measures to save energy. Those measures include the installation of bike racks, using wind and solar energy to offset 70 percent of the electrical load for two years, and diverting more than 75 percent of the construction waste from landfills. LEED is the building council's leading rating system for building and designing energy efficient buildings.

Golfing for a cause

Several groups representing firefighters within the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District are putting on a golf outing to benefit Scott Burkemper, a local firefighter battling kidney cancer. The outing will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 27, at the Chalet Hills Country Club, 943 Rawson Road, in Cary. The event costs $105 and includes 18 holes of golf, lunch and dinner. Proceeds will help offset Burkemper's medical bills. People who would like to golf, sponsor or donate raffle prizes can call Erick Kennedy at (847) 489-6694.
