Bears sign undrafted punter

The Bears signed former Texas Longhorns punter Richmond McGee to a one-year contract today.

McGee entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008 and spent a majority of the preseason with the team before being released last August. During his career at the University of Texas (2002-05), McGee averaged 39.6 yards on 130 punts. Thirty-six percent of his kickoffs (96 of 265) went for touchbacks.

McGee will compete with 13-year veteran Brad Maynard, 35, who led the NFL last season with 40 punts inside the 20-yard line. Last season Maynard punted 96 times for a 41.2 yards average and a net average of 38.1, the second highest of his career.
