Harper linebacker Forbes chooses North Dakota St.

Harper College outside linebacker Dillon Forbes is heading north to continue his football career.

On Tuesday, the 6-foot-1, 233-pound Forbes signed a national letter of intent to attend North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.

The Bison play in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, (formerly Division I-AA).

"North Dakota State has been recruiting him since high school," said Hawks coach Eric Waldstein.

North Dakota State, a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, finished the 2009 season with a 3-8 record. The Bison play their home games in the Fargodome.

Forbes, who graduated from Homestead High School in Wisconsin, was named to the all-region team and earned honorable mention recognition in the Midwest Football Conference for the Hawks.

"Dillon is a great kid," Waldstein said via e-mail, "We have some big shoes to fill for next year at his position."

Men's basketball

As if finals week at Harper College is not enough activity for students, the Harper men's basketball team (6-7) will play three games this week - all at the Sports and Wellness Center in Palatine.

Coming off Saturday's loss at Daley, the Hawks earned an 84-66 victory over Oakton on Tuesday. Brandon Bolger (Schaumburg) led the Hawks with 23 points, and freshman Avery Roche posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

On Thursday, former Harper coach Mike Hirsch brings the College of Lake County Lancers to Palatine.

In 1999, Hirsch took the Hawks to a fourth-place finish in the Division III national junior college tournament.

South Suburban (9-3), which finished seventh in last year's national tournament, comes calling Saturday.

After a break to celebrate the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the Hawks are back in action Jan. 5 against archrival College of DuPage at the Sports and Wellness Center.

Women's basketball

The Harper women's team (8-5) captured a 51-41 victory Tuesday over Oakton (6-6), as guard Peggy Parhas (Lake Zurich) scored a team high 25 points and guard Noreen Davis (Conant) led the Hawks with 12 rebounds.

The win gave the Hawks a season split with the Raiders.

On Thursday, the Hawks travel to Waubonsee (4-9), which has won three of its last four games.

When the Hawks and the Chiefs played Dec. 10, Waubonsee captured a 51-48 win.
