Pennies add up for cancer campaign
For the 14th consecutive year, Prospect High School's Service Club organized an all-school fundraising campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America. They raised $2,019.32 for research and a cure.
"This total is down a little from last year, but it's still a great effort," said Dave Jacobson, service learning coordinator for the school.
The Pennies for Patients campaign, as it is called, is organized as a friendly competition between seventh period classes. This year, students in 46 classes participated. Top honors went to Regina D'Souza's chemistry class, which raised $255 and earned a pizza party.
Second place went to Karen Kruse's Honors World Literature class, which raised $165.50, followed by Kurt Trenkle's Advanced Placement Environmental Science class at $135.39 and Terri Buczinsky's Honors Literature class at $107.16.
"Our 14-year total for this cause is now over $46,000," Jacobson said. "Once again, the students and staff at Prospect High School have generously reached into their collective pockets to benefit a worthy cause. Everyone should feel great about what our school has accomplished."
Concert for NIU: Prospect High School's Chamber & Varsity Choirs, under the direction of Ken Whitney, will perform a concert at 2 p.m. April 6 at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N. Dunton Ave. A freewill offering will be collected, with all proceeds going to the NIU February 14 Student Scholarship Fund.
Titled "… and the light," the concert will feature pieces such as "The May Night" by Brahms, "Requiem" by Rutter, "Bogoroditse Djevo" by Part and works by Finzi, Thompson & Whitacre.
According to Whitney, the concert proceeds are being earmarked for NIU's scholarship fund because, for the past two years, Prospect High School choirs have participated in Northern Illinois University's Choir Day in the fall.
This event has given these Prospect High School students a chance to work directly with NIU faculty and students, so the tragedy of the Feb. 14 events felt very close to home for Prospect students, Whitney said.
"This is our chance to give back to the university," Whitney said. "With our gifts of finances and music, I hope we'll be able to bring light to a dark situation."
