Let's show the world we're united

As I gaze at the map of North America, I am struck by the name given to the area we inhabit. It is called the "United States." Yet I am concerned as of late about the unity of our country. Allow me to explain.

Recently, our President nominated a Latino for the U.S. Supreme Court. I have no trouble with the nominee if she has the qualifications for the position, but I am concerned about the euphoria of the Latinos in our country that "one of their own" as been nominated to a position of prominence. It seems that we are beginning to emphasize the differences in our country instead of the commonalities. The African-Americans celebrated vociferously because "one of their own" has been elected President. Are we becoming segmented by ethnicity? By gender? By sexual orientation? Are we becoming a divided culture?

I fully understand that this country is a "melting pot" of diverse peoples, but we must begin to emphasize the ideas, beliefs, and attitudes that bring us together. We are confronting tremendous challenges now, and will be facing more in the future. I hope that all of us can pull together and work together to make this country an example to a very divided world.
