Third strike nets Waukegan man life in prison

Enough is enough.

A Waukegan man who spent the better part of his life proving that he was not going to comply with the rules of a civilized society will now spend the rest of it indoors.

Bob Brison, 51, was sentenced to life in prison last week under the state's habitual criminal act for this third major felony conviction.

Assistant State's Attorney Steven Derue said Brison began committing crimes as a juvenile in 1973 and four years later stepped up to the majors with an armed robbery conviction that netted him four years in prison.

Another armed robbery conviction in 1986 netted Brison a 30-year stay, and he was paroled in 2001.

Last year, the police kicked in the door to Brison's apartment and collected more than 2 ounces of cocaine, making Brison eligible for the lifetime ticket.

Brison was somehow allowed out on bond while awaiting trial on the drug charge and he used that opportunity to fire a number of gunshots into houses occupied by his ex-wife and her mother.

Associate Judge Daniel Shanes granted Derue's request for the life sentence, saying signs of rehabilitative potential in Brison had been "affirmatively refuted."

Schostok running:

Justice Mary Seminara Schostok of Libertyville has announced her candidacy to retain her seat on the 2nd District Appellate Court in Elgin.

Schostok, who was appointed to her present post last year, is running for a full 6-year term in all 13 counties that make up the 2nd District.

"I really love being on the appellate court," Schostok said. "I get to really study the law and find the post very challenging."

Before her appointment, she was a circuit judge in Lake County and served as the deputy chief judge for the civil division of the 19th Judicial Circuit.

Schostok served as an assistant state's attorney in Lake County before her appointment to the bench in 1998 and was chief of the juvenile and special prosecutions divisions.

A pair of seat belt enforcement operations in Lake County last month snared 41 people.

Police in Gurnee set up a roadblock in the 3500 block of Grand Avenue on May 22 and found that seven of the 425 drivers they checked were not wearing their seat belts.

A similar operation on May 28 at the intersection of Hook and Orchard drives in Round Lake Beach resulted in 35 people being cited for not wearing a seat belt, and three more ticketed for child safety seat violations.
