Life lessons from kindergarten hit the stage
Share.
Play fair.
Don't take things that don't belong to you.
If you hurt someone, say you're sorry.
Follow simple lessons that are first taught in kindergarten and apply them throughout your life.
Robert Fulghum brings his stories to stage, celebrating everyday moments and sharing how certain lessons, what he calls the Kindergarten Creed, can be applied and maybe even better understood as we get older.
"All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten" opens Friday, Nov. 7, and runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 23 at the PM&L Theatre, 877 Main St., Antioch.
"These concepts are planted in young lives, but they only start to get it when they get a chance to live a few years," cast member Bob Wang said. "Be an adult, and you make the connection."
The cast includes Wang of Bristol, Wis.; Murry Holmstrom of Bristol, Wis.; Janaan Rose of McHenry; Trish Jansta of Antioch and Fran Jansta of Antioch. Each cast member serves as a storyteller and singer. And each story, whether it be embarrassing tales from a wedding or individuals pondering mortality, ties into lessons first heard in kindergarten, Trish Jansta said.
Fran Jansta said one story that reflects the three stages of a father's life relates to one creed, hold hands and stick together when crossing the street.
"Sticking together to cross the street can be a metaphor for anything that happens to you, any difficult times," said Fran Jansta, who also serves as director.
Songs include the humorous "Uh Oh," a word that has been part of the vocabulary since the diaper stage. Wang said his favorite is "Reflect the Light," which stresses the importance of reflecting goodness upon others and to be a model citizen.
Trish Jansta said she hopes audiences leave the show wanting to be a kid again, taking risks and having fun.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. To reserve tickets, call the box office at (847) 395-3055 or visit the Web site pmltheatre.com.
