Trucks and treats await kids in costumes in Vernon Hills
The Vernon Hills Park District is hosting Trucks, Trunks & Treats on Saturday, Oct. 17. Community Relations Coordinator Marty Walsh tells us what you need to know.
Q. What makes this such a fabulous event?
A. This event is made possible by the generosity of local organizations and businesses that provide the vehicles for the event. We will have about 15 different vehicles on display. Children and their families will be able to get an up-close and personal look at some really unique vehicles. We've incorporated a Halloween theme to the event and are encouraging kids to dress up in their costumes. Each participating organization/business will hand out treats to all those who are in costume. Culver's of Mundelein will be on-hand to provide concessions, and there will be a number of children's activities available.
Q. How long has this event been in existence? How has it changed, and what is new this year?
A. This is our inaugural year, and are very pleased with the level of participation from area organizations and businesses.
Q. What's the highlight of the event?
A. The highlight will be the wide variety of vehicles that will be on display. Knauz Motors of Lake Bluff will be displaying a Smart Car; Deerbrook Limousine will be providing two stretch limousines; and Veolia Environmental Services will be displaying one of their recycling trucks, just to name a few. However, kids in costume will argue that the highlight will, of course, be all the candy they get!
Q. What kind of activities will appeal to kids and families?
A. Kids will be able to decorate their very own trick-or-treat bags; there will be hayrides provided free of charge; and there will be a bounce house.
Q. What about adults? What does the event offer them?
A. Adults will be able to join their kids on the hayrides, purchase concessions and are encouraged to wear a costume as well. Parents can come to an event where their children can trick-or-treat in a safe, family-oriented environment.
Q. What kinds of food and beverages will be for sale?
A. Culver's of Mundelein will be selling a variety of items, including hot chocolate, cider, chili and hot dogs.
Q. Tell us about the volunteers and organizers who pull this together.
A. Gail Hermann is the event coordinator, and she and I are working to secure the vehicles and to plan the activities. Other park district staff are generously volunteering their time to help the event run smoothly.
Q. Is there anything else we should know?
A. Trucks, Trunks & Treats is a great example of the park district's commitment to strengthening their relationships with the local community, from municipal departments such as public works and the fire departments to area businesses like Knauz Motors and Deerbrook Limousine. We hope to make this an annual event!
