West Aurora Dist. 129 board fills vacancy

The West Aurora District 129 school board Monday appointed Maricela Perez to fill the remaining two years of the term of board member Allan Rhea.

Rhea, who served six years, resigned his post May 5.

Perez was one of 19 people who submitted letters of interest in the school board position. One dropped out; the school board interviewed the other 18.

Perez is a family medicine nurse practitioner at Aunt Martha's Healthcare Network in Aurora. The lifelong Auroran has two children who attend District 129 schools. She has a master's degree in nursing from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Aurora University.

Perez received the Kane County Health Department's "Hidden Hero" Award in 2007.

In 2007, Perez spoke about "Community, State and Business Partnerships to Address the Diabetes Crisis" at the annual conference of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation.
