Harper student has swine flu:

Officials at Harper College said Friday that a female student has a confirmed case of swine flu. As recommended by the Illinois Department of Public Health, classes on the Palatine campus will not be interrupted. The student became sick April 30 and went to a doctor Tuesday. She told her instructors, who reported the case to college officials. Harper is notifying her classmates and teachers via phone, letter and e-mail and sent out a campuswide e-mail.

Hoffman asks for bike input:

Hoffman Estates wants the public's input on its bicycle plan. Meetings are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Jefferson Elementary School, 3805 Winston Drive, and from 3 p.m. 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at village hall, 1900 Hassell Drive. Cop-turned-teacher honored:

Former Hoffman Estates police lieutenant Ron Harper is the recent recipient of the Harlan Award for Academic Excellence from Rasmussen College in Rockford, where he works as the criminal justice program coordinator. The award recognizes employee excellence. Harper is the former Mentor Center coordinator on the campus and currently serves as a regional coordinator for the National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security. School officials cited his commitment and ability to engage students in active learning.
