Picnic concludes Lisle ceremonies
The Lisle community will remember the sacrifices veterans have made at Monday's annual Memorial Day parade.
"It's a nice thing for the community to get together," said Kimm Biedermann, who helps organize the event, including a large picnic, on the park district's end.
The district also teams with the local Ross Bishop VFW Post 5696.
The parade will start at 11 a.m. at Lisle Junior High, 5207 Center Ave., and then head west to Main Street, east on School Street and then to the village hall, 925 Burlington Ave. The Rotary Club, park district, chamber of commerce, employees from the village hall and local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts usually participate in the parade, Biedermann said.
Free flags will be distributed along the route.
A wreath-laying ceremony by the fire department will be held at the village hall, and then participants will go to Lisle Cemetery on the 900 block of Ogden Avenue for a remembrance service. The Rolling Thunder Illinois Chapter 1 will have a Remembrance Table set up, which memorializes prisoners of war and men and women missing in action from all five branches of the military.
Steve Wandtke, service officer for the VFW, said the ceremonies are followed by a gun salute, a rendition of taps and a display of the colors.
"The ceremonies are to make the general public aware of the sacrifices that were given by our men and women in uniform," Wandtke said. "They died for our freedom, and this is a day to remember them for their sacrifice."
The day will end with a free community picnic at the Museums at Lisle Station Park, 921 School St., which will include hot dogs and refreshments.
