'Evidence' was flawed in township complaint

In an Oct. 6 Fence Post letter, former professor David Hamilton called for the elimination of township government. He submitted as "evidence" his claim that Wayne Township blocked a needed water project for four years.

Mr. Hamilton's "evidence" - and by extension his conclusion - are fatally flawed. The Wayne Township Road District (WTRD) was involved in project negotiations for just over nine months - not four years. And, far from blocking the project, WTRD supported the water main. Had WTRD opposed the project there would have been no negotiations at all.

What is my evidence? I have personal knowledge of these facts because I represented the road district in the negotiations. The primary negotiating issue dealt with legal protections for the use of road district property. Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society where multimillion dollar judgments are all too frequent. If a government agency is on the losing end of such a lawsuit, the taxpayers foot the bill.

Therefore, the protections I sought - and received -- were for the public benefit. Civil discourse today is rife with self-proclaimed "experts" who draw conclusions while lacking even the most basic of facts. Professor Hamilton's woeful scholarship on this issue places him squarely in that group.
