The local Altrusa Woman of the Year Award began in 1950 when Harriet Armstrong was recognized as the first recipient. Since then, a long line of dedicated local women have been honored for their volunteer service to the greater Elgin area community.
"Nancy Rohr has made a tremendous impact in South Elgin and the Elgin community," said Dr. Clare Ollayos, Altrusa Woman of the Year Committee Chair. "She joins a very distinctive group that has made a difference in the Elgin area community. Nancy exemplifies the Altrusa keys of Amity, Loyalty, Talent, Reciprocity, Unity, Service, and Achievement. Community service has been very important in Rohr's life. She has compassionately served the citizens of South Elgin and as a leader in many local organizations."
Rohr served three consecutive terms as an elected trustee for the village of South Elgin. During her terms and 15 years in office and since, she has served the South Elgin community as: police committee chair, road and bridge committee chair, member of the ordinance committee, finance committee and water commission.
Her guidance helped place South Elgin on the map, which is evidenced by the Governor's Home Town Award the Village received in 2002. The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department also received the Distinguished Agency Award from the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association in 2007, which made history by being the only parks and recreation department to ever receive this award.
Rohr organized and chaired the first ALS Tag Day for the South Elgin area. She is active at Epworth United Methodist Church in Elgin. She has served as a member of the stewardship committee and welcoming/evangelism committee. She volunteers with Meals on Wheels through Church Women United. She has held leadership position as a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She was a committed member of the League of Women Voters and volunteer at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. She was born in Elgin to Edna Nesler Peetz and Carl F. Peetz. With her late husband, Bob, she has made South Elgin her home for the past 53 years. She has three adult children, seven grandchildren, and she will soon be a great-grandmother.
