Cary business faces $1,200 fines after violating liquor laws

The Cary Liquor Control Commission has ruled that a local business violated the village's liquor law when it sold a six-pack of beer to a minor.

As such, Volume Liquors must pay a $1,000 fine, $200 in attorney's fees and ensure that all its employees - including license holder Bharat Jasani - become certified with the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education program, also known as Bassett training.

Jasani has until Aug. 3 to prove everyone has completed the training, the ruling stated. Failure to do so could result in another hearing that may involve additional fines, said Village President Tom Kierna, who also is the village's liquor commissioner.

Volume Liquors is at 382 N. Northwest Highway.

On April 24, according to the complaint, an employee at Volume Liquors sold a package of Miller Genuine Draft to someone who was younger than 21.

Kierna said it was part of a police sting that targeted 15 businesses - Volume Liquors was the lone establishment violating the rules, he said.

The fine is due in full by 5 p.m. June 22.
