Northbrook man charged with luring teen

A 60-year-old Northbrook man has been arrested for trying to lure a 17-year-old girl into his car near Stevenson High School, Lake County Sheriff officials announced today.

Yakov Timoshevskiy, 60, of the 2000 block of Valencia Drive, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of disorderly conduct, officials said. He is held in Lake County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond, of which he must post 10 percent.

Sgt. Christopher Thompson, spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, said police believe Timoshevskiy spoke to the Stevenson student, offered her a ride, then three times ordered her to get into his car as she walked to school just after 9 a.m. Monday. After the third time, the teen ran to her parked car near the area, and locked herself inside.

Lake County Sheriff's Det. John Willer conducted surveillance in the 23000 block of Apple Hill Lane, where the confrontation occurred, to look for anyone matching the suspect's description. About 8:42 a.m. Tuesday, a white Chevrolet transport van driven by Timoshevskiy drove past the area and Willer stopped the vehicle, Thompson said.

After speaking with Timoshevskiy, Willer snapped a picture of him. It was one of six photos in a lineup viewed by the victim. Thompson said the teen immediately identified Timoshevskiy, and he was and asked to come to the sheriff's office.

Investigators have been able to put Timoshevskiy within 5 miles of the scene about a half and hour before the confrontation, Thompson said.

Thompson added Timoshevskiy was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct instead of more serious charges because the confrontation with the teen was all verbal and not physical.

"I cannot say enough about the fine police work performed by Detective John Willer in this case," Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said. "Our sketch artist, Nora Rubel, did a fantastic job as well in putting together the sketch of our suspect."

If convicted, Timoshevskiy could face up to a year in jail.
