Input sought on Des Plaines park project
Des Plaines residents will be asked for their comments on the Lake Park Development Project at a public forum at 6:30 p.m. May 28 at Lake Park Clubhouse, 1015 Howard Ave. (at Lee Street).
The Des Plaines Park District is seeking an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to complete the project. The forum will explain how the money will be used.
The park district primarily plans to keep the land as open space for softball, flag football and soccer, family activities, kite flying and Frisbee, etc.
Recommendations under consideration along the perimeter of the park area include a large shelter, extending the walking/biking path that connects with the playground area and the existing path, putting in a fishing pier and/or a gazebo, and a sensory garden and native landscaping improvements.
The grant would allow work to begin on the park in spring 2010.
The park area, which formerly belonged to Good Shepherd Church, was bought with a $750,000 Land Acquisition Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
The forum is free, but space is limited. Call Paul Cathey, superintendent of parks, at (847) 391-5700 or paulc@desplainesparks.org.
