Montini makes sure of win over Benet
Montini coach Chris Andriano reminded his team about Benet's smothering defense that shut the Broncos down last season. Montini quarterback Brandon Pechloff ensured there wouldn't be a repeat performance.
Pechloff fired two first-quarter touchdown passes and senior Ryan Gorrell added a touchdown on the ground as the Broncos overwhelmed the Benet defense en route to a 43-6 victory Friday evening at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
"We really came out smoking tonight," Andriano said. "Our offense came out with a great game plan and our defense did a great job of shutting them down. I thought the coaches did a great job of preparation and we bounced back from a tough game last week."
Pechloff hit junior Jordan Westerkamp with a 44-yard strike that set up the first Broncos touchdown early in the first quarter. On the Broncos' next possession Pechloff capped 6-play drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to senior David Zirko. Minutes later, Pechloff hit Westerkamp with a 54-yard touchdown pass on the first play of their third possession. In the first seven minutes of the contest, Pechloff was 9 of 10 with 177 yards passing and 2 touchdown passes.
"I came out and wanted to do better than last week," Pechloff said. "The line blocked everyone they had to, and the receivers just popped open."
Montini (1-1) enjoyed a 30-0 lead before the Redwings (1-1) answered with a 29-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Luke Terna to senior Phil Schmidt. It would be the only score for Benet.
Benet coach Gary Goforth credited the Broncos offense for their efforts on both sides of the ball.
"We didn't bring our 'A' game or 'B' game," Goforth said. "They brought their 'A' game. We brought neither. We weren't surprised by anything they did. Big plays happen and we couldn't stop them. My hats go off to them. They executed their game plan. We didn't on either side of the ball."
