West Chicago bans video gambling
West Chicago has joined the growing list of communities saying no to video gambling.
The city council voted unanimously Monday to ban it in the community.
"We feel that this is not the fix for what the state is trying to achieve," Mayor Michael Kwasman said. "It's also not the image West Chicago wants or needs."
In July, Gov. Pat Quinn approved a $31 billion capital improvement package that allowed video gambling, expected to raise $367 million a year. Towns have the ability to outlaw the machines in their communities, but those that allow video gambling will receive 5 percent of each machine's profit.
Last month, the city council's public affairs committee recommended banning the machines. Other DuPage County communities that have voted to prohibit video gambling include Addison, Bloomingdale, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Winfield, Naperville and Villa Park.
