Police plan checkpoints

Arlington Heights police will operate three roadside checkpoints between Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Sept. 5, to look for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. Checkpoints will be set up roughly from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, along South Arlington Heights Road; Saturday, Aug. 22, along West Rand Road and at Higgins and Oakton roads on Friday, Aug. 28, with the Elk Grove Village police. Arlington Heights also will have extra patrols on the streets the last weekend of August and the first weekend of September. At checkpoints, officers will slow traffic, stopping cars at predetermined intervals.

School groundbreaking today

Barrington Unit District 220 will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the district's new Early Learning Center from 8:30 to 9 a.m. today. The facility will adjoin Barrington Middle School-Prairie Campus at 40 E. Dundee Road in Barrington, and house federally mandated programs for preschool children with special needs or who qualify for at-risk services. The $11.7 million facility is expected to open in fall 2010 to replace the aging 1950s-era Woodland Early Learning Center in Carpentersville. Guests attending the groundbreaking are asked to enter the front-left entrance of the middle school.

Part of Hanover Pk. lot closes

A section of the Hanover Park commuter parking lot at County Farm Road and Lake Street will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday until Sunday evening for repaving. About 218 parking spaces will be out of service, leaving 1,181 spaces open.
