VFW families spend Sunday hunting for Easter eggs in Wheaton
A broken foot wasn't going to keep 11-year-old Foster Youngs from jockeying with a mess of kids Sunday for his fair share of Easter eggs outside DuPage Memorial VFW Post 2164 in Wheaton.
The Lowell Elementary School student awkwardly maneuvered with his crutches to grab his first pieces, then ditched the crutches and crawled along the lawn.
About 55 children - with their families in tow - swooped across to clean up the colorful plastic orbs as a couple of parents jokingly yelled "anything that's not grass, pick it up." Within minutes, the grass was cleared.
Vivian Krause, president of the women's auxiliary club, said the VFW post has run the annual egg hunt for at least the last 12 years. Both the candy, as well as the stuffed animal prizes, were donated from members. Dee Williams spent the afternoon videotaping Sunday's hunt for families, and her daughter, Tawn, entertained the tot crowd dressed as an Easter Bunny.
Jacki Rutkowski and her husband, Tom, rummaged through the bounty their sons, Andrew, 6, and Matthew, 2, scooped up.
"They definitely are all about candy," Jacki Rutkowski said. "The big Easter Bunny kind of scares them."
