Hanover Park man jailed in Huntley shooting

Two suburban men are facing felony charges after police say they fired shots outside a Huntley strip mall last week in a drug ripoff gone bad.

Mahood Roohani, 18, of the 3700 block of Monitor Drive in Hanover Park, was charged Sunday with attempted armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and armed violence stemming from the incident in a parking lot at 9714 Route 47.

He was in custody at the McHenry County jail Monday after judge set his bail at $150,000 during a morning court appearance.

Scott M. Treece, 21, of the 3800 block of Thornberry in Lake in the Hills, was arrested Monday and faces the same charges, police said. Treece was being held at the McHenry County jail Monday awaiting bond call.

Police said Monday that Roohani and Treece went to the lot Thursday intending to rob a group of five teens and young adults - three of them Huntley High School students - who were planning to sell drugs out of an SUV parked behind the strip mall.

Police said the group included two 16-year-old boys from Huntley, a 17-year-old man from Huntley, a 20-year-old woman from Huntley and a 19-year-old Crystal Lake man.

After arriving at the parking lot, Treece and Roohani, who was armed with a semiautomatic handgun, approached the SUV wearing bandannas, police said.

When the SUV's driver saw the gun, police said, he began backing up in an attempt to escape. Roohani, police said, opened fire, shooting one round from the handgun into the windshield of the SUV, but not hitting any of the occupants.

After the SUV sped away, Roohani and Treece fled on a blue motorcycle.

Roohani, police said, has ties with a street gang.

Police said the case remains under investigation and more charges may be filed.
