Rabid bats in Lake County:

Two rabid bats have been found since April 17 in Lake County, officials announced Thursday. One bat was found in an Antioch yard April 17, according to the Lake County Health Department. Another bat was discovered in Waukegan on April 19. Both bats tested positive for rabies. Health department officials said there was no human or pet contact with either bat. Residents are urged to avoid bat contact because of the chance of getting rabies, which affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. Anyone who has direct contact with a bat or notices one of the creatures acting unusually - such as flying in daylight or lying on the ground in a home - to contact the health department at (847) 949-9925. Officials said bats can be beneficial to society by eating crop-destroying pests and up to 600 insects an hour.
