Internet safety lessons:

Internet Safety Night for students in seventh grade or older and their parents takes place 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 19 at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 South Arlington Heights Rd. in Arlington Heights. Representatives of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office will provide an Internet safety presentation for parents about online predators, social networking Web sites and tips on talking with children about Internet safety issues. Issues to be addressed with students include cyberbullying and the hazards of posting personal information online.

Park commissioner retiring:

Wheeling Park District Commissioner Tom Webber will end 20 years of public service at the May 12 park board meeting. Webber, who did not seek re-election, served as president for 16 of his 20 years as commissioner. A longtime Wheeling resident, Webber coached youth sports, and was a spokesman and advocate for various boards and causes, including the local school district, chamber of commerce, public library, and Illinois Association of Park Districts. He spearheaded the Friends of the Parks Committee to garner support to build a new recreation center. He was also instrumental in the construction of an award-winning aquatic center, completion of a new fitness center and indoor aquatic center, passage of a referendum to save and renovate the historic clubhouse at Chevy Chase Country Club, and completion of a major renovation of Traditions at Chevy Chase Golf Course.

Firefighters fundraiser set:

Members of the Des Plaines Professional Firefighters Local 4211 will participate in a national fundraiser sponsored by Baskin & Robins from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the ice cream store 850 Elmhurst Road. Members of the fire department and their families will be scooping 31-cent ice cream scoops and provide fire prevention public education. There will be a fire engine for adults and children to climb on. Donations will be accepted for the union's charity committee, which supports local events within the city.
